Program: Introduction to the UNCW Coastal Engineering Program

Description:

In 2019, the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) began offering a Bachelors of Science degree in Coastal Engineering to help meet the growing needs for a workforce trained in coastal processes and engineering; the first class of 17 students graduated in December 2022. The program is housed in a new facility on the UNCW campus where an experimental wave flume is currently being installed. Dr. Long will provide a brief overview about the program including the curriculum, internship experiences, capstone projects, and the placement of alumni in various companies and agencies. He will also introduce the program faculty and the various research projects being conducted.

Speaker:

Joseph Long, Phd., Director of the UNCW Coastal Engineering Program

Dr. Long is an Associate Professor and Director of the UNCW undergraduate Coastal Engineering program. He received an undergraduate degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Clarkson University in 2000 and worked for Stearns & Wheler LLC in Cazenovia, NY. Dr. Long then received a Masters of Ocean Engineering and PhD in Civil/Coastal Engineering from Oregon State University in 2005 and 2009, respectively.  Prior to his role at UNCW he was a Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow and then Research Coastal Engineer with the U. S Geological Survey in St. Petersburg, FL from 2009 to 2018. While at the USGS he served as the project chief for the National Assessment of Coastal Change Hazards project and worked with many state and federal partners to develop models and tools to address regional needs. His research program combines both observations and numerical models to inform coastal management decisions and determine the vulnerability of communities and ecosystems.
