Because What We Wear Shouldn't Wear Out the Earth
Join the university community for a special Earth Day discussion about the negative ecological impact of the "fast fashion" industry and how we, as informed consumers, can encourage apparel manufacturers around the world to move toward a more sustainable and ethical future by changing our buying habits and rethinking what we choose to wear.Much of today's clothing is made of synthetic fabrics derived from petroleum and other nonrenewable resources. And so much is produced that more than forty million tons of unsold items end up being burned or dumped into landfills each year, making the world's garment industry a significant environmental polluter and a major source of harmful microplastics in the global water supply.
About the Speaker
Kaidza is a Kenyan-American social entrepreneur working to empower African fashion creatives to build sustainable businesses in the digital age. She is a founder of Kupsie Ink—an enterprise that provides an online marketing platform, training, and apprenticeship opportunities to budding fashion entrepreneurs in Kenya and East Africa—and she strongly believes that the future of sustainable fashion lies in the hands of small to medium fashion producers.
