Dr. Madeleine K. Albright

Madeleine Albright served as the first female Secretary of State under President Bill Clinton, and prior to that held many others, including United Nations Representative, Presidential Cabinet member, professor, author, and advisor.

During her career as a diplomat in service to the United States, Albright quickly learned the power of her voice and responsibility she had to speak up on behalf of women. She also learned that her signature accessory, a revolving collection of brooches (or pins as she preferred to call them), had the power to send messages to those she was about to meet/battle and the public alike. She took to using brooches to convey messages of hope, determination, and even sometimes warnings. Playing off the common idiom, she told people to “read my pins” if they wanted to know what she was thinking or feeling.

Albright’s pin collection became first a traveling, and now permanent, museum exhibit. While attention-getting in themselves, the pins are simply a small representation of Albright’s accomplishments, strong convictions, and advocacy for female leadership.
