The Miracle of Mindfulness | The Miracle of EMDR

presented by
George Abbott PhD

Both EMDR Therapy and mindfulness meditation are intended to eliminate human suffering. While EMDR Therapy was developed to relieve extraordinary suffering from traumatic experiences, the aim of mindfulness practice is to relieve everyday, mundane suffering. The two approaches complement each other in the goal of relieving all human suffering.

The workshop is designed to explore these two practices and how their applications can lead to changes in mental states and traits (stages) of consciousness. Participants will explore how these practices can help promote the development of “higher waves” of human consciousness. You will be invited to consider client profiles suggesting referral for EMDR Therapy, mindfulness training, or both. Finally, the benefits of mindfulnesspractice for your own life and work will be discussed.

What can I expect to learn?

  • Stories illustrating the Miracle of Mindfulness and the Miracle of EMDR from the treatment room
  • Why Francine Shapiro was initially concerned about comparing EMDR Therapy with mindfulness meditation
  • The explanatory AIP model for EMDR: “Transmutation” and “Reconsolidation” of memory.
  • The Four Foundations of Mindfulness
  • The explanatory model of Vipassana “To see things as they are”
  • The related goals of eliminating “Old Stuff” and “Old Sankhara” (old conditionings)
  • What the Abhidhamma, the central text of Eastern Psychology, identifies as “Healthy” vs. “Unhealthy” mental factors
  • Experiential exercises evoking “healthy mental states”, e.g., Insight, Proficiency, etc.
  • Using EMDR Resource Enhancement
  • Models of the development of human consciousness: From archaic and mythological to conventional and from person-centered to post-personal forms, such as nature mysticism and deity mysticism
  • How to recognize the spontaneous emergence of higher levels of consciousness during EMDR Therapy sessions—and what to do about it?
  • How to know when to apply EMDR Therapy vs. when to refer clients for mindfulness training, or both EMDR Therapy and Mindfulness.

See how both EMDR Therapy and Mindfulness Meditation bring people to focus on their mental contents, emotions, and body sensations. Consider the potentials of these practices to help patients reach into higher levels of consciousness, however briefly, to solve problems that evade conventional levels of consciousness. This event presents a unique opportunity to reflect on information as provided by the leader in conjunction with your own professional and personal experiences, including engagement with various exercises in the workshop.
