WEEKEND WEBINAR
October 20-22, 2023
An Introduction to the Integration of
Structural Dissociation, Ego State Therapy and EMDR Therapy

"This course really was an unexpected gem in your ability to bring so many things together in an understandable way, plus pull from so many of the theorists in the field at just the right time to explain things in a way that makes sense. I appreciate new skills I learned and your modelling of them. Your high skill as a clinician, and your own integration of your skills as well as your collaborative way of working makes you a world class teacher!!"

–Carol Watson, November 6-7, 2021 Attendee
EMDRIA Approved Consultant

"...this workshop has informed my practice exponentially and you made it very practical, tangible and allowed me to apply it right away. I have seen incredible results with clients because of it. I especially liked how each section was presented by a different clinician; we received the benefit of various skill sets of these clinicians."

About Farnsworth Lobenstine, LICSW

FARNSWORTH LOBENSTINE, LICSW is on the national faculty of the EMDR Institute, serving since 2001 as a Facilitator. He has been an EMDRIA Approved Consultant since 2003. He consults nationally and internationally on Complex Trauma and Dissociative Disorders with EMDR trained therapists. From 2007-2019, Farnsworth taught an academic year-long Advanced Seminar on the Integration of Structural Dissociation and Ego State Therapy with EMDR Therapy in Western Massachusetts. He now co-teaches them on line. Since 2013, he has presented workshops around the country and now teaches them online.

He co-authored a lengthy article published in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research in 2013 on his highly successful brief, intensive treatment, using EMDR and Ego State Therapy with a woman who had been hospitalized.

Farnsworth is passionate about the extraordinary privilege of working as a psychotherapist, walking for a time with others on their journey towards health and a vibrant life. He is equally passionate about teaching EMDR trained clinicians advanced skills so they can succeed with their most complex clients.

This weekend webinar will give participants who have already completed the EMDR basic training critical skills needed for working with clients who have Complex Trauma and/or Dissociative Disorders. Participants will learn about and practice developing their own Meeting Place/Conference Room, the most widely used technique for working with ego states and parts of self to resolve internal conflicts. The Meeting Place adds an essential aspect of relational work to EMDR. Clients experienced their trauma in isolation. Supportive connection between the adult client and the child parts of themselves who experienced the neglect, abuse, or unresolved grief.

We have added two evening hours on Friday for a more spacious approach to this work. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be a morning didactic segment followed by a break for lunch, after which there will be a demonstration of the Meeting Place with a participant volunteer. Supervised practicums of the Meeting Place in triads will be conducted both afternoons. The afternoon ends with some time for consultation. These complex clients can be treated successfully using modifications of the EMDR Protocol but without deviation in Phases 3-6.

Participants will be strongly encouraged to complete advance readings, available upon registration, before the workshop. Those unfamiliar with this subject reported difficulty in grasping the workshop content without reading the material. Advanced readings include powerful transcripts of actual Ego State Therapy and Structural Dissociation sessions with clients, used with permission.

Early Registration Rate (ends Sept 1st): $375

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:

  1. Describe three core concepts of Ego State Therapy that make EMDR more effective with complex trauma clients.
  2. Understand the distinction between Apparently Normal Parts and Emotional Parts of the Personality and how their distinct action systems clarify treatment.
  3. Assess how Fraser's Dissociative Table Technique (often called the Meeting Place or Conference Room) facilitates work with aspects of self.
  4. Demonstrate beginning confidence using the Meeting Place with clients through your own supervised practica experience.
  5. Apply knowledge gained to several of your complex trauma and/or dissociative clients.
  6. Discuss when to use several specific techniques during EMDR work with ego states/aspects of self.
  7. Utilize successful strategies for honoring hostile introjects’ protective intentions and gaining their alliance.
  8. Explain the usefulness of the Tip of the Finger Strategy in reducing the vehement emotion held by Emotional Parts of the Personality to facilitate EMDR treatment.

"Farnsworth and his colleagues have created an excellent webinar. It's a rich mix of didactic, clinical videos, demos, and supervised practice. It is peppered with Parts/EMDR-friendly techniques and useful resources. But the heart of the course is the Meeting Place for parts, an essential skill for anyone working with complex clients – and that means all of us – whether we know it or not."
