Building Really Big, Hardware-Reliant Systems with SAFe

We explore eight agile practices that provide guidance in applying Lean-Agile principles to the construction of very large systems.

 

Many engineering organizations are finding success in adopting Lean-Agile principles and practices. As these organizations build and deploy ever-larger applications—in increasingly complex, connected, and unpredictable environments—they face significant challenges not directly addressed by existing Agile guidance. These systems often require multi-year roadmaps, coordinating 1000s of developers and suppliers, and integrating hardware and other long lead-time items. How does Agile help them specify these large systems, plan the work, organize the people, measure progress, manage risks, and ensure verification, validation, and compliance?

This talk explores eight agile practices that provide guidance in applying Lean-Agile principles to the construction of very large systems. We will discuss how to scale agile teams to very large systems, continually refine specifications, plan at multiple levels, manage supply chains, and frequently integrate large systems.

Harry Koehnemann is a Methodologist and SAFe Fellow at Scaled Agile Inc., where he helps organizations build and deliver solutions faster, more predictably, and with high quality with SAFe. He has spent the past two decades working with large system builders in aerospace, defense, automotive, and other industries to apply Lean-Agile principles to their engineering practices, including requirements management, quality management, and compliance.
