The Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certification course is designed to equip you with skills to help young people who may be experiencing mental health or substance abuse challenges.

Studies show that those trained in MHFA have greater confidence in providing  help to others, greater likelihood of advising people to seek professional help, improved concordance with health professionals about treatments, and decreased stigmatized attitudes. The course covers common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges that are common among adolescents. Learn how to interact with a person in crisis and how to connect a youth with appropriate help.

Learn how to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental health illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a five-step action plan (ALGEE):

  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm
  • Listen nonjudgmentally
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies

Upon completion of the course, you will earn a 3-year MHFA certification.
