EWRI-CFAEP Joint June Luncheon: Progress Towards Restoring Lake Apopka 

Please join EWRI and CFAEP for a 1-hour technical presentation with speaker Dr. Erich Marzolf, SJRWMD Division of Water and Land Resources Director, to learn about the ongoing restoration projects at Lake Apopka.

Lake Apopka is a shallow, 30,800-acre eutrophic lake northwest of Orlando, Florida. The lake's health is threatened by three conditions: eutrophication due to excessive phosphorus loading; wildlife effects of residual organochlorine pesticides; and severe multi-year droughts which significantly impact water quality and critical habitat health. In response to these threats, the St. Johns River Water Management District has been implementing a multi-part restoration program which incorporates a variety of innovative techniques addressing each threat. Dr. Erich Marzolf will be delivering a 50-minute presentation that will highlight ongoing projects to examine the lake's regulation schedule and use of the North Shore wetlands to better meet current water quality, water supply, habitat, and flood protection missions.

Dr. Erich Marzolf is the Director of the Division of Water and Land Resources with the St. Johns River Water Management District in northeast Florida. He oversees the District’s restoration, land management and data collection programs. For seven years he was a supervising scientist on the Lake Apopka program. Erich earned a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of California Davis where he studied subalpine lake ecology. Prior to joining the District Erich was a scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
