Professor Randolph Willard,

Prof. Willard presents an overview of problem solving and root cause analysis.

 

This presentation provides an overview of problem solving and root cause analysis, including the background/history of root cause analysis, characteristics and development of an appropriate problem statement, types of problem solving tools, and how to use problem solving tools to identify a root cause.

Randolph Willard is a retired career nuclear submarine officer with over twenty years of active-duty U.S. Navy experience operating, testing, and evaluating Fast Attack and Strategic Ballistic Missile submarines. Mr. Willard’s Navy tours included Chief Nuclear Engineer on a Strategic Ballistic Missile submarine, Officer-in-Charge of the Naval Nuclear Prototype Unit in Idaho Falls, Idaho, as well as acquisition and program management tours at Naval Sea Systems Command and PEO Submarines in Washington, DC where he achieved DAWIA Level III certification in Program Management.

Since retiring from active duty, Mr. Willard has spent over twenty years in executive and leadership positions in the defense industry and as Professor of Program Management at the Defense Acquisition University, Western Region, San Diego, CA. Mr. Willard’s acquisition and program management experience includes direct support to Naval Sea Systems Command, PEO Submarines, Strategic Systems Program Office, SPAWAR, PEO C4I, PEO EIS, ICBM Systems Program Office, Sandia National Laboratories, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Kansas City National Security Campus, Draper, Lockheed Martin, Viasat, Northrop Grumman, and U.S. Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center.

Mr. Willard’s background includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Vanderbilt University, U.S. Navy nuclear engineering training, and post-graduate studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University School of Management, Defense Systems Management College, and Defense Nuclear Weapons School. Mr. Willard’s educational experience includes teaching DoD Acquisition, DoD/DOE Nuclear Weapons Acquisition, Systems Engineering, Test & Evaluation, and other courses to active-duty military, government personnel, and defense contractors throughout the United States.
