Rare Conservation Opportunity – Tsavo Trust

Space for wildlife in today’s world of ever-increasing human expansion is rare! Here in Tsavo, with its wilderness expanse, there is very real and meaningful opportunity to not only secure what wildlife and diverse habitat that currently exists, but to significantly build on this by supporting the Kenya Wildlife Service to preserve this space to allow wildlife thrive. Time is short given the immense challenges Tsavo faces daily. Tsavo Trust is trusted by KWS, has a formal partnership with KWS and is well placed to provide such support.

Tsavo Trust was established in 2012, and since then has grown organically from two employees to its current staff of 80. Our work goes beyond borders of Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks to protect at risk species and instill a culture of conservation and community empowerment. With over 10 years’ experience in the Tsavo Landscape, Tsavo Trust understands the many and varying challenges that the Tsavo’s face daily. We are flexible to these needs as they come, making Tsavo Trust unique.

Tsavo Trust tackles these challenges by implementing three key Goals:

1. Create effective management and protection of protected areas by supporting the Kenya Wildlife Service and Wildlife Research and Training Institute – Aerial patrols; ground protection and monitoring support with a specific emphasis on the “Big Tusker” elephants and the Key 1 black rhino population in Tsavo West NP.

2. Establish strong and effective community-led conservation and development initiatives through the conservancy model: Developing and stewarding self-governing, community-led wildlife conservancies in specific key areas within the TCA, forming secure buffers to the Protected Area and fostering of partnerships with other organisations already working in support of wildlife, habitats, and communities in the Tsavo landscape.

3. Develop a more resilient and robust long-term financing framework for Tsavo: Partnerships and collaboration are key to success. Tsavo Trust is well placed as a conservation hub, with an established field base allowing for effective operations, program implementation and development for Tsavo Trust and our partners to implement conservation projects.
