Speaker Bio:

My research focuses on earth-surface processes (geomorphology) applied to a broad range of problems. Much recent work involves rivers, fluvial geomorphology, flood hydrology, floodplains, and watersheds. My research group applies fluvial geomorphology, hydrologic and statistical tools, hydraulic modeling, and other approaches to assess river dynamics and flood hazards. Although much current research focuses on rivers, I continue to work on a broad range of processes that shape the earth surface and operate, in particular, over anthropogenic time scales (yes, the "Anthropocene"). One pressing human application is for managing risk from natural hazards, and my group has worked extensively on quantifying those risks, guiding mitigation and other solutions, and providing a scientific basis for sound natural-hazards public policy.

Speaker Abstract:

Geomorphology is the branch of geological science most closely linked in focus (earth surface and near-surface) and time scale (mostly the Holocene) to human impacts and applications. As a result, geomorphology can start in academic research, but range far from there into consulting work and even "moving the needle" on public-policy issues. This talk will bring together stories from this slippery slope ranging from geomorphic research to distant, and sometimes odd, applications of our science. The 21st century brings numerous challenges related to human interactions with earth-surface science. This includes stories from "forensic geomorphology" [litigation support] illustrating how, sometimes, scientists can be conscientious advocates and bring scientific rigor to the legal process.

Sponsorship Opportunities

To help offset event expenses and fundraise for future meetings, we are offering organizations the opportunity to sponsor meetings for $100. Sponsors will be recognized for their generous donation at the event, and their logos will be featured on our website, this landing page, and given a chance to speak at the meeting. If you are interested in attending and sponsoring our May meeting, please RSVP and chose the $100 Sponsorship registration option through the online platofrm linked above. Please also feel free to reach out to us with any questions and to submit company logos to aegsacto@gmail.com.
