National Symposium
ABOUT THE GvHD NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
This unique conference focuses on cutting edge research and new treatments. Our symposia have two tracks: one designed for physicians and other health care professionals, and one for bone marrow transplant (BMT) survivors, their families and their caregivers.
The Meredith A. Cowden Foundation in collaboration with the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, and Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute, created the GvHD National Symposium in 2010 to raise awareness about Graft vs. Host Disease (GvHD), to promote research to further our understanding of its cause, and to review cutting edge approaches to prevention and treatment.
Over 2,000 people have attended our events, which have provided an opportunity for attendees to interact with some of the world’s leading authorities on GvHD, a complication that affects over 60% of bone marrow transplant patients. Our past symposiums have served as invaluable experiences to learn, network and exchange ideas with each other.
To support those with chronic graft versus host disease and those in the community, this year we will once again host a live symposium in Independence, Ohio. A hybrid option will be available to those unable to attend in person.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Gregory Yanik, MD
Professor of Pediatrics, Blood and Marrow Transplant Program
Mott Children’s Hospital
Biosketch: Dr. Gregory Yanik has been a faculty member within the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program and Division at the University of Michigan since 1992. He was born and raised in the Detroit area, attended medical school at Wayne State University and trained in hematology-oncology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. He and his wife Marybeth have three grown children. Dr. Yanik has been the recipient of many prestigious awards in recognition of his contributions to medical research, clinical care, and education, including the Leland and Elaine Blatt Professorship of Pediatric Oncology, the University of Michigan Pediatric Teacher of the Year Award, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Chairman’s Citation for Outstanding Service. Academically, he has made sentinel contributions in two areas of research: a) acute and chronic lung injury post-hematopoietic cell transplant, and b) developing novel transplant trials for patients with high-risk neuroblastoma. In addition to these many activities, Dr. Yanik makes time to serve on the Executive Committee for Make a Wish Michigan.
