Course Description & Information
This advanced course will build on concepts and skills that students have learned in an introductory course. Students will have an opportunity to learn intermediate mediation theory and skills that can be applied to disputes in a variety of areas such as family law, civil, and child protection mediation. The inclusion of the application of skills to the area of child protection mediation is unique to this course. Students will be challenged to consider topics from a variety of lenses, including from Indigenous, multi-cultural, LGBTQ2S+, and abilities contexts.
This advanced course places an emphasis on role plays. Students will be given ample opportunity to develop their skills and receive feedback from skilled coaches. Coaches are mediators who work in a variety of dispute resolution areas.
The course is 12 weeks in length with two sessions per week. The course is delivered exclusively through an online platform. Each session is two hours in length. Each week there is one instructional session and one coaching session.
In addition to time in instructional and coaching sessions, students can expect to spend up to an additional two hours per week on course work. Intermediate Mediation Skills will provide students with a total of 46 hours of core education in dispute resolution and mediation theory, including 10 hours of simulated role play.
