Our research project looked into the role of psychosocial mentorship (mentoring) in improving startup founders’ self-leadership and, consequently, in influencing positively their leadership capacity. We used a mixed methodology design that included both quantitative and qualitative data collection from the founders and their employees. During our webinar we want to share the findings of our research and its implications for research and practice as the psychological aspect of mentoring for startups has not been adequately examined in the literature or taken into consideration in practice.

Dr. Eleftheria Egel is a mentor, scholar and an impact-driven educational entrepreneur. She has devoted her career to working with women entrepreneurs from all over the world. She guides them to enhance their human and professional capabilities and build mission-driven businesses. Her latest entrepreneurial endeavour is EOS Academy; a pre-seed online learning platform for women social entrepreneurs. Her practice is informed by her scholarly research on female leadership & entrepreneurship, sustainability and (Islamic) spiritual leadership.
Currently, Eleftheria serves as Executive Board Member of One Planet Education Networks and Advisory Board Member of Ethics International Press. She is a fervent community supporter. Among other initiatives, she co-founded #SheHustlesAfrica in Nigeria together with the indigenous NGO AKAWI to assist local women entrepreneurs solve business challenges and grow.
Adjunct Professor Ivan Yong is a organisational psychologist, angel investor and author. He is the founder of Nanyang Angelz, an angel investment group and Corporate Disruptor Forum, a leading voice in corporate venturing and innovation. He is also the startup mentor for MDEC (an agency of the Malaysian Government), speaker at start-up events i.e. StartupLand Egypt and organizer of “Founder-Funder” meet with corporations such as Zurich Insurance, Volkswagen and Hong Kong Science & Technology Park.
As the founding VP of Social Responsibility Initiatives (SRI) of EMCC APR & Head of EMCC Global SRI Workgroup, Ivan has initiated various global projects in Nigeria, Uganda, Malaysia, Hong Kong with the purpose of “democratizing coaching” for the underprivileged youth, women and disabled graduates. Ivan is also an experienced organizational psychologist in helping Fortune 500 select, recruit and develop human capital with the use of psychometric tools.
