Harmful or Helpful? Behind the Headlines on Best Practices for LGBTQ Youth

This training event will award 2 contact hours for LMSW and LCSW with the NYSED State Board for Social Work and 2 contact hours for LMHC and LMFT with the NYSED State Board for Mental Health Practitioners and 2 CASAC renewal credits.

With numerous bills currently being passed related to LGBTQ+ young people, such as Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill and the Texas movements to criminalize gender-affirming care, many parents, teachers, and helping professionals are feeling concerned, confused, and uncertain as to how to best proceed in caring for young LGBTQ+ people in the current sociopolitical climate. This talk will begin with dispelling some common myths about LGBTQ+ youth, identity, and development, to clarify much of the contradictory information currently circulating. Next, a conversation will be presented on best practices for clinicians who hope to support LGBTQ+ youth and their loved ones. Participants can expect to finish the training feeling clearer on current understandings of LGBTQ+ youth and the best ways to protect them in this uncertain and rapidly changing climate.
