The Colorado Ski Safety Act
and Its Application to Collision Reconstructions

Presented by:
Compass Consulting Engineers

Seth Bayer, P. E., Senior Engineer

This presentation will educate attendees in the fundamentals of an engineering approach to accident reconstruction of skier-skier-snowboarder collisions and how they relate to the Colorado Ski Safety Act. This course will outline the type of physical and electronic data that can be used to reconstruct a skier-skier/snowboarder collision and will cover the principles of the Ski Safety Act in Colorado.  Three case studies will be used to illustrate different approaches:

  • A skier-snowboarder collision where the Plaintiff was shown to be the party at fault, based on analysis of equipment damage.
  • A skier-skier collision using momentum analysis.
  • A skier-skier collision where tracking data solved the case.

Attendees with learn the following items related to snow sports accidents:

  • List of relevant data required or obtained and how it is used for a physical analysis when reconstructing a skier collision event.
  • Colorado Ski Safety Act terms and definitions
  • Scene investigations (access issues, scans)
  • Equipment inspection (skis, boots, helmet inspections)
  • Ski Tracking Apps and how they are used in reconstructing accidents.
