Ge Hong (283-343 CE), a patriarch of the Ling Bao tradition of Daoism, is considered one of the innovators of Chinese Alchemy and acupuncture practices and a leading proponent of stone medicine (based on his alchemical findings). As such, Ge Hong has contributed immensely to the understanding of how different phases in the transformation of matter into transient states can be refined through the careful and meticulous regulation of Fire and Water (Dan Tien or San Jiao). His observations have impacted how different metallic ores can impact qi (e.g., use of gold, silver, copper, iron needles) in acupuncture, the role of stones/minerals to soften hardness/stubbornness (both physically and metaphysically) in individual diseases, and the dynamics of tangible and subtle states in the healing process. This seminar will examine the tradition of Ge Hong and how his alchemical doctrines can be instrumental in the cultivation of a Chinese medicine clinician and applied to Chinese medical therapies/modalities and acupuncture treatments.
