This year's features: 

MaineDOT’s I-395/Route-9 Connector is a critical gateway that has been discussed for decades and which will tie the interstate to the “Airline,” or Route 9.  The project is being built by Sargent Corp., and will jumpstart connections, safety, and economic vitality to the region and to the state. The Bangor/Brewer area is the economic and employment center for the north central region of the state, and a hub for the movement of goods due to its proximity to the interstate highway system and Canadian markets.  In addition to Sargent, HB Fleming is another MBTA (drive piling) and Northeast Paving are completing significant work for the $106 million project. 

Northeast Paving’s new terminal and hot mix-plant expansion in Hermon, is one of the largest industrial projects in Central/Eastern Maine in recent years.  The $16.5 million expansion includes three 10,000-ton tanks for storing liquid asphalt and a 250-ton tank to hold polymer.  The state-of-the-art project also extended the adjacent rail spur to make it more efficient to deliver liquid asphalt to the plant from Searsport, where the petroleum product comes in by ship, or Canada.  The expansion was needed to meet the demands of the central and northern Maine regions. Northeast Paving worked closely with the Town of Hermon and partnered with MaineDOT to extend the Canadian Pacific Railway spur to the plant.

The University of Maine, the state’s flagship campus, has been planning and executing various capital improvement projects, in part due to the transformative Harold Alfond Foundation grant which will provide $240 million system-wide over 12 years to all campuses in the UMS system.  In addition to the new Ferland Engineering Education and Design Center, UMaine’s major projects include a recently completed $8.3 million field hockey complex, and a $9.5 million softball complex with bleacher seating for 500 fans.  The University has broken ground on a new boutique hotel on campus scheduled to open in the spring of 2024.  MBTA will tour some of these projects, which are certain to add prestige to the campus, and assist with attracting students and faculty alike.
