Advanced Tree of Life A La Carte Series:
A Narrative Approach to Rescue and Reclaim Preferred Identities

Dates: Five Fridays -- January 19, 2024, from 10 am to 5 pm ET; and then February 9 & 23, March 8 & April 5 from 11 am to 3:30 pm ET

We welcome you to choose all or any of the days that seem most meaningful to you. Please note a formal introduction to Tree of Life is a requirement to participate in any subsequent days. The Advanced Series Days are:

Day 1: January 19, 10 am to 5 pm ET (5.5 CEUs) -- Introduction to Tree of Life: History and foundations of Tree of Life; Narrative ideas that inform the approach; Introduction to the “Imbeleko” approach; Four parts of Tree of Life 

Day 2: February 9, 11 am to 3:30 pm ET (4 CEUs) -- Tree of Life and responding to loss and bereavement: Challenges and dilemmas linked to responding to issues of death and dying; The "Saying Hullo Again" metaphor; Using the Tree of Life metaphor to respond to loss and grief; Happy Remembering projects

Day 3: February 23, 11 am to 3:30 pm ET (4 CEUs) -- Tree of Life and working with groups and communities: Setting up Tree of Life groups; Benefits of the group approach; Different types of Tree of Life groups; Monitoring Tree of Life groups; Running online Tree of Life groups

Day 4: March 8, 11 am to 3:30 pm ET (4 CEUs) -- Tree of Life and working with couples and families: Introduction to using Narrative Therapy with families and couples; Different ways to use Tree of Life with families; Weaving in other Narrative practices to Tree of Life when working with couples and families; Introduction to the Definitional Ceremony map; Introduction to the Statement of Position map

Day 5: April 5, 11 am to 3:30 pm ET (4 CEUs) -- Tree of Life and working with teams and organizations: Adapting Tree of Life for organizations and teams; Using Tree of Life to respond to burnout; Case studies

Regular Registration Fees for the Series Option:

  • All 5 Days: $450 with early bird rate of $425 until 12/15/23
  • Days 2-5: $375 with early bird rate of $350 until 12/15/23

Student/Senior Registration Fees for the Series Option:

Additional Information:

  • Group Rate: A discount is available for groups of four or more people from a single agency or organization; to register a group, email narrativetherapyinitiative@gmail.com.
  • CEUs: We are applying for a total of 21.5 CEUs for LMFTs with NEAFAST and LICSWs/LCSWs with NASW-MA. Please note it is the participant's responsibility to check with the respective licensing board to determine if these approvals meet the requirements for licensure renewal. If you need LMHC or Psychologist CEUs, we will assist you with the application process by providing you documentation of attendance and workshop information at no charge. If you are a LMFT or LCSW/LICSW and will need a CEU certificate, please order one in the registration form and let us know your professional license number. CEU Certificates are $25.00 and cover any days you attend.
  • Cancellation Policy: Refunds will be given up to 14 days prior to the event minus a $25 cancellation processing fee; within 14 days of the event, no refunds will be provided.

Presenter Bio:

Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo is the pioneer and co-developer of the Tree of Life Counselling Methodology. She is a psychologist, narrative therapist, and psychosocial specialist with over 15 years’ experience working in the area of mental health and psychosocial wellbeing. She specializes in designing programs and interventions for various vulnerable groups and communities. Her work has largely focused on supporting children, women, and communities affected by HIV and AIDS, poverty, and conflict in East and Southern Africa. Ncazelo has travelled extensively in Africa, Europe, and Australia, providing training in responding to hardships and trauma and sharing her experiences with mental health practitioners. Over the years, Ncazelo’s work has focused on developing culturally sensitive therapies to respond to the hardships and trauma experienced by children, women, and communities.
