AIHEC 2024 Legislative Summit

The 2024 AIHEC Legislative Summit meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Washington Capitol-National Mall, 550 C. Street, SW, Washington, DC on February 6-9, 2024. (Travel days are February 5, late on Feb. 9 or Feb. 10.) The Summit will be held in person, but some meetings with Congressional delegation members and staff likely will be held virtually. At this time, we anticipate that the House and Senate buildings will be open to the public, but possibly with some restrictions. The individual Congressional offices determine their own meeting status.

Again, travel days are Monday, Feb. 5, and Saturday, Feb.10 (or afternoon of Friday, Feb. 9). The schedule of events will be sent to participants via email prior to the Summit. It will not be posted online.

We encourage all TCUs to bring at least one student to this important event. All students in attendance should be able to share a compelling story of her or his educational journey with particular focus on the value of a Tribal higher education.

Please note: It is very important to register ALL participants for this meeting. Each TCU may bring up to TWO participants without incurring a registration fee. The AIHEC Board of Directors approved a motion at the 2023 fall meeting to implement a registration fee for each additional participant beyond two per TCU.  A registration fee of $250 per person, to help cover the costs of meals provided, will be assessed for TCUs that register or bring more than 2 participants beyond the TCU President. TCUs registering additional participants will receive an electronic invoice after registration.  TCU President's do not count as one of the two participants.

Using the registration link below, please have ONE person register all those attending from your college. To help us accommodate Capitol Hill requests for names of all meeting attendees, please be sure to register all participants from your institution by 5:00 pm (EST) on January 19, 2024. Please include student/other participants names as soon as you are able to provide them.

Pre-Meeting Webinars: To prepare for meetings with your Congressional delegation, AIHEC will host a 1-hour webinar (offered twice) to discuss priorities and key meeting points. We expect all participants to join one of the two webinars. (You only need to participate in one.) Webinars will be: January 24 and January 25 at 3:00 p.m. (ET). Webinar information with zoom links will be sent prior to the webinars.

To reserve your hotel room: Make your hotel reservations at the Holiday Inn Capitol: Click here for the booking link or call: 1-877-834-3613 and provide the group code when prompted. Room block begins Sunday, February 4 - Friday, February 9, 2024.

Group Code: AI9.  (Again, booking link is: AIHEC 2024 Legislative Summit)

Rate: $193/night, plus 15% tax.

Room block ends on January 19, 2024 or earlier if full. Reserve a room now. (This cutoff date is firm.)

Hotel Cancellation Policy: Individuals are able to cancel their reservations up to 72 hours prior to arrival to avoid charges for room and tax.  However, if you plan to cancel your reservation(s) AFTER Jan. 19, 2024, please contact Danelle Springer first. Another TCU may need your canceled rooms.

Closest airport:  Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

Closest Metro stop: L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station.  (If you take the Metro from DCA, take the BLUE Line in the direction of New Carrollton to the L'ENFANT PLAZA stop. You may view the Metro map here.)

DC Weather Averages: High 47 degrees F, Low 27 degrees F

Items to Bring: As some of your Congressional delegation meetings may be virtual, you may want to bring a laptop (or ensure that at least one person in your party brings a laptop).

You may want to bring info-packets from your college as well as a SMALL memento or branded TCU item (pendant, etc.) to the Congressional offices (value not to exceed $15-20.) This is not necessary, but many TCUs like to do this.

Note: It is very important that ALL participants register for this meeting no later than 5:00pm (ET) January 5, 2024.
