The airlift started in June of 1948 and ended in May of 1949.  Much has been written and said about the American efforts in the Berlin Airlift.  Don Smith, author of Steinstuecken: A Little Pocket of Freedom will talk about the German (and especially West Berlin) contribution to the Western Allies' efforts to break the Berlin Blockade.  What specific challenges did the people of West Berlin face, and how did they overcome those challenges?  What kinds of threats did West Berliners face from the Soviet forces that surrounded their city?  What did they do to help make the Airlift a success?  Who were the West Berlin heroes of the Airlift crisis?  This presentation will cover all those topics.
