About Gary Karr

Since his debut with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic in 1962, ISB founder Gary Karr has enjoyed an unparalleled career as a world renowned double bass soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, recording artist, author, educator and philanthropist.

Music in Times of Crisis

Welcome back to Getting Together with Gary! ISB founder Gary Karr hosts an online salon, inviting special guests to share stories, ideas and points of view about the musical life. On Saturday, December 2, Gary will be getting together with Michael Klinghoffer, bassist, award-winning educator, author, conductor, and president of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance for a conversation on what it means to be a musician in times of crisis.

Michael Klinghoffer is the author of “Mr. Karr, Would You Teach Me How to Drive a Double Bass?” a book devoted to the technique and philosophy of his mentor Gary Karr. Michael has been at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance since 1987, where in addition to his double bass studio he has also conducted orchestras, coached chamber music and taught classes on music history, aesthetics and pedagogy. He cherishes the things in life that we cannot assign numbers to, such as values, meaning and creativity. As a teacher he believes that teaching is an ART and that the most important role of a teacher is to confuse his or her students. Professor Klinghoffer strongly believes that talent is not a matter of geography. Along with his academic commitments and performing engagements, he devotes much time and energy to working with young people of diverse backgrounds around the world.
