Cosmetic Psychotherapy: Ethical Considerations of Therapy without Presenting Problems

This training event will award  2 contact hours for LMSW and LCSW with the NYSED State Board for Social Work and 2 contact hours for LMHC and LMFT with the NYSED State Board for Mental Health Practitioners and 2 CASAC renewal credits.

As the stigma around therapy lessens, a new wave of prospective clients emerges. Influenced by pop culture's portrayal of therapy as trendy and a symbol of affluence, this shift challenges how we approach treatment plans for clients who don't fit the traditional definition of struggling.

This workshop delves into cosmetic psychotherapy, a field targeting individuals already emotionally and behaviorally satisfied but seeking performance enhancement. Similar to the ideals of cosmetic surgery and psychopharmacology, this approach prioritizes self-actualization over addressing deficiencies. It explores the ethical nexus of psychology, medicalization, and marketing, offering clinicians valuable insights into the ongoing discourse surrounding cosmetic psychotherapy's merits and considerations
