The Integration of Behavioral Health in Health Care

This training event will award 2 contact hours for LMSW and LCSW with the NYSED State Board for Social Work and 2 contact hours for LMHC and LMFT with the NYSED State Board for Mental Health Practitioners and 2 CASAC renewal credits.

While patients typically present with physical health complaints to the ER, often somatic symptoms are medically unexplained. Research suggests that these visits could be triggered by underlying mental health or substance abuse issues. This workshop will discuss the effects of the medical and behavioral co-morbidity and provide insight into the struggles medical providers may have in managing these patients. Attendees will learn the effects of mental health on medical treatment adherence, in addition to the stigma and discrimination that takes place in health care. The bio-psycho-social model of health and illness will be discussed and the importance of collaboration between behavioral and medical providers.
