Join JASA President (and San Diego resident) Wilson Grabill for a one-day excursion to San Diego on Friday, May 20, for a fascinating immersion in Japanese art and culture! All events will take place in Balboa Park, home to many of San Diego's cultural attractions.

First we'll visit the Japanese Friendship Garden, which has recently completed a significant expansion. In addition to viewing the exquisite flora and structures in the garden, we'll tour a small show there called "Threaded, Traveled, Treasured: Kimonos from Japan in San Diego Collections." After that, we'll walk over to the Mingei International Museum for a tour of "Mingei of Japan - Treasures New and Old from the Museum's Collection," led by museum director Rob Sidner.

The Mingei Museum has one of the largest and finest collections of Japanese folk art in the country, and more than 100 objects are on display, including recent donations of stunning folk textiles and charming votive plaques called "ema." At the end of the afternoon, independent curator Meher McArthur will present a lecture on "Painted Prayers: Japanese Ema Votive Plaques," followed by an optional gala dinner for JASA members at the Prado Restaurant in Balboa Park.

Limited to 15 JASA Members.

Fee to participate is $20 per person, which covers all entrance and lecture fees.

Optional dinner is $85 for three course prix fixe and one glass of wine.

Sign up and pay by Friday, May 13. No refunds for dinner cancellation after Tuesday, May 17. Hotel suggestions can be provided on request.

Registration is first come, first served. If you would like to attend, please register by clicking the button below and fill out the registration form.  We will provide a full schedule of events along with a map of Balboa Park to those who register.
