Box for square-shaped calligraphy paper with hanging basket of flowers and praying mantis. Japan, Meiji period, second half 19th century (before 1892). Lacquered wood with gold, silver takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, cut-out gold foil application and mother-of-pearl inlay. 3.8 x 24.8 x 20.3 cm. Japanese Lacquer Tutorial:
Behind-the-scenes visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with Assistant Curator
of Japanese Art, Monika Bincsik, to learn first-hand about Japanese lacquer. Dr. Bincsik is one of the most well-respected specialists in the decorative arts of Japan, specializing in the different techniques of urushi. 

Each of the two sessions will be limited to 15 JASA members. 
Reservations are required. 

The cost per person (members only; no guests for this popular session), will be $30, plus museum entry. Further details to come.
