The 1960s in American Memory

How do we remember the 1960s? As the Age of Aquarius, a time of harmony and understanding — buoyed by sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll — when America stood on the verge of achieving its promise of freedom and equality? Or as a period of violence and discord — fueled by war, riots, and assassinations — when America began to fall apart?
