Ready to sharpen your trial skills? Every trial is unique - judges analyze issues with various reasoning processes, different opponents react differently, and the facts will always have a surprise. Our panel of esteemed judges and attorneys will provide their views on the most effective techniques to present evidence to a judge or jury.
Come to Wayne State Law's nicely appointed Spencer Partrich Auditorium next Monday, April 10th. Easy access, with convenient reasonable parking. Be ready to jump in to enjoy the fast-paced action in this two hour give and take interactive exercise, discussing and debating surprisingly diametrically opposed opinions on various "trial best practices."
You will be sure to leave with at least a scintilla of valuable insight when you engage with experienced judges and trial lawyers as they discuss their views on the most effective means to present your good, true and favorable evidence, along with tips and tricks to aid in your quest to keep your opponent's unfair, unreliable, irrelevant, prejudicial, and unfavorable so-called evidence out...
Put your business cards in your pocket now, there will be a wide spectrum of attendees, many of them lawyers who may need a referral in your practice area. Panelists are:
- Hon. Edward Ewell - In addition to serving on the bench in the criminal and civil division and presiding over hundreds of trials, Judge Ewell served as a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Michigan where he tried numerous criminal, civil, and civil rights cases. Judge Ewell is a current adjunct faculty member at Cooley Law School where he has taught trial skills for the past six years.
- Hon. Timothy Kenny - Judge Kenny spent six years as Chief Trial Attorney for the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, assigned to complex and high publicity cases. He as tried nearly 100 murder cases, and as a judge has presided over many trials that received national media attention.
- Hon. Qiana Lillard - During her 8 year career as Assistant Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney, Judge Lillard focused primarily in the trials division in the areas of elder abuse, child abuse, and domestic violence and most recently as a member of the sexual assault team and as a specially assigned prosecutor for the special victims unit. She has handled high-profile cases involving serial rapists, police officers charged with sexual assault, and child homicides Currently Judge Lillard serves in the Wayne Country Third Circuit Court Criminal Divison in the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice where she presides over felony trials and district court appeals. She is also a member of the Criminal Division Drug Court team and handles cases from both the Urban Drug Court and Adult Drug Court programs.
- Jenna Wright Greenman - Jenna was named as a 2016 Women in the Law Recipient. She has tried many medical malpractice cases to verdict and is especially proud of her wins again Geoffrey Fieger. She has worked in front of many judges and juries in Michigan and out of state and is grateful to have had this exposure and experience at a young age. Jenna is married to a plaintiff attorney (the best teacher she has ever had!) who has tried over 100 cases. Their dinnertime discussions often revolve around how a jury thinks and perceives witnesses and evidence.
- Frances Rosinski - During her 20-year tenure at the Attorney Grievance Commission, Fran tried hundreds of cases against attorneys. While the trials were held before a panel of 3 attorneys, who sat as the trial court, the rules of evidence applied and the trials were held just like a civil trial with the presentation of witnesses, documentary evidence, cross-examination, and expert testimony.
- John Perrin - In 27 years of practice John has tried medical malpractice actions before juries for both the plaintiff and the defense. He has tried cases before juries involving guardianships in probate court, commercial disputes, product liability, contract actions, as well as professional negligence involving accountants and lawyers. He has handled bench trials involving landlord tenant actions, quiet title actions, collection cases, and evidentiary hearings conducted in federal bankruptcy court. John has also presented cases for both plaintiffs and defendants in arbitrations before single and multi-member panels. Most of his practice involves complex litigation involving hundreds to thousands of pages of documents that must be admitted into evidence and presented to juries in a manner that is easy to comprehend within the context of the dispute. He has conducted both direct and cross examination of hundres of experts in medicine, accounting, ethics, legal standards, engineering, construction, and marketing. He has handled cases where the damages ranged from a few hundred dollars to tens of millions of dollars for clients wo were indigent individuals as well as large muti-million corporations. While his practice has been very diverse, the one single common thread has always been the need to prepare and present disputes to either juries or judges in a persuasive manner in trial.
Audience discussion will be encouraged, and our event will be followed by a social hour with light hors d'oeuvres, beer, and wine.
