Oakcliff Challenge 2016

Coach David Dellenbaugh

Coaching Day, Fleet Racing, Match Racing

Oakcliff Sailing is excited to announce the second Oakcliff Challenge. We created this in-house as a result of the discussions in Scuttlebutt about the growing demand for a more exciting, varied, social racing format. We view this as a challenge from sailing organizations including yacht clubs, schools and community sailing organizations.

We are inviting all Yacht Clubs, Sailing Centers, and College Sailing Teams to join Oakcliff for three days of multi-format racing.  The day one clinic will be run by David Dellenbaugh to get teams up to speed in the Match 40s. Anyone who has been to an Oakcliff Sailing clinic can testify to how entertaining, educational and fun the day is. Day two will be a day of short fleet races with real-time coaching, and finally day three will see the champions crowned after an ISAF grade 5 match race regatta.  There will be a fleet race winner, a match race winner and an overall winner.

David Dellenbaugh is the publisher, editor and author of Speed & Smarts racing newsletter. He was the tactician and starting helmsman on America3 during her successful defense of the America's Cup in 1992 and sailed in three other America's Cup campaigns from 1986 to 2007. David is also a Lightning world champion, two-time Congressional Cup winner, seven-time Thistle national champion, two-time winner of the Canada's Cup match racing championship, three-time Prince of Wales U.S. match racing champion and past winner of the U.S. team racing championships for the Hinman Trophy. Dellenbaugh wrote and narrated the Learn The Racing Rules video, and he is currently a member of the US Sailing Racing Rules Committee (and was its chairman from 2005-2008). David also does clinics and seminars, coached the US match racing team at the 2012 Olympics, and is currently a tactical and rules coach for the US Sailing Team during its run-up to the Rio 2016 Olympics.

We expect a lot of fun and camaraderie where we will have as many of the teams that want to, stay in the new Bunkhouse and spend their evenings commingling and socializing.

This new and exciting format is a great opportunity to race the sleek Match 40 in high intensity short course racing, and to learn and apply many of the match racing tactics that will take your fleet racing to another level and importantly add a social side to the event.
