Creative Ways to Incorporate Music in the Therapeutic Process

Friday, March 25, 2022   *   8:00 am - 12:15 pm (4 CEUs)

(7:30 - 8:00 am sign-in)

Beaver Creek Country Club, 9535 Mapleville, Rd, Hagerstown, MD 21740

This program is funded in part by the William B. and Sylvia A. Hunsburger Fund

As humans, we use music in our everyday lives – to motivate us while we exercise, calm our nerves, express our feelings, and connect with others. This is because music affects us neurologically, physiologically, and psychosocially. While music therapists are trained to facilitate transformation through music in specific ways, music therapy principles can be carefully applied by other healthcare professionals to facilitate therapeutic outcomes. During this training, participants will learn about music therapy and how to use music to augment clinical practice, specifically with people experiencing mental illness. We will also discuss the music therapy scope of practice, and ethical and cultural considerations for using music in the therapeutic process.

At the conclusion of the seminar, attendees should be able to:

  • Define music therapy
  • Describe the music therapy scope of practice
  • Identify ethical and cultural considerations for using music to support therapeutic outcomes
  • Develop ways to use music to augment conventional therapy interventions in a variety of settings
  • Use music to support relaxation

Featuring Bronwen Landless, MMT, MT-BC

She started a music therapy program at a psychiatric residential treatment facility for children and adolescents, and successfully ran and grew the program for eleven years. She has also provided music therapy services in acute in-patient psychiatric units and out-patient community medical clinics. Bronwen has presented nationally and internationally both at conferences and continuing education trainings. She is a doctoral candidate in Creative Arts Therapies at Drexel University with a current research focus on exploring the impact of therapeutic songwriting on people experiencing homelessness and their communities.
