Burned Area Learning Network:                     Santa Clara Field Trip & East Jemez        Working Session

Your participation is requested: Please join us for a two-day program exploring post-wildfire impacts, responses, and best practices.

DAY 1 – Santa Clara Pueblo Post-Fire Restoration Field TripThursday, May 10th, 9:00 am–5:30 pm | Santa Clara Pueblo Office and Santa Clara Canyon

Santa Clara Pueblo has been severely impacted by recent wildfires, most notably the Las Conchas Fire in 2011. Since the Las Conchas, the Pueblo has been working to restore forests and reduce the threat of post-fire erosion and flooding.

Santa Clara will host a field trip on May 10th to share techniques and results of their post-fire rehabilitation work. Field trip participants will see first-hand the impacts of the Las Conchas fire, as well as restoration projects that have been implemented to replant burned slopes, restore riparian areas, and mitigate channel incisions. Participants will have the opportunity to dialogue with the individuals who have planned and carried out recovery treatments.

Day 2 – East Jemez Landscape Futures Restoration and Research Working SessionFriday, May 11th from 8:30 am-4:30 pm | University of New Mexico, Los Alamos Campus, Building 2 Room 230

After seeing some of the on-the-ground restoration at Santa Clara, you’re invited to join us on May 11th to continue exploring the restoration potential of other watersheds in the eastern Jemez.

Through this working session, participants will share more information on the state of our knowledge and describe actions occurring in the fire, flood, and drought-affected areas of the eastern Jemez landscape. This is a work day for us to brainstorm ideas for strategies, research proposals, actions, or partnerships to advance restoration in these areas.

This working session is led by the East Jemez Landscape Futures, in partnership with BALN. The East Jemez Landscape Futures (www.eastjemez.org) is an initiative to support managers, researchers, NGOs, and community members in areas of the eastern Jemez impacted by high-severity fire, post-fire floods, and prolonged drought, by offering opportunities to share information and experiences, and plan together.

Please register by April 20th to attend the field trip, working session, or both!

Field trip space is limited—reserve your spot early.
