Public Libraries & the Homeless: Webinar (4/2/14)

Public Libraries & the Homeless: Equity, Empowerment & Community Engagement

Homelessness is a systemic issue in the communities our public libraries serve whether your library is in an urban, suburban or rural setting, which begs the question: what is the public library’s role in the community-wide effort to end homelessness?  This webinar will address this question as well as present on topics such as:

  • Creating & implementing library policies that are equitable & promote a welcoming atmosphere for all
  • Strategies for connecting patrons with resources & services
  • Building partnerships with community groups who work with the homeless
  • Programming & outreach ideas to engage youth, adults & families experiencing homelessness
  • Advocacy & public education about the issue of homelessness and the rights of homeless patrons

Virtual Trainer: Amy Mars

Amy Mars is a librarian at St. Catherine University & Hennepin County Library in Minnesota.  She authored a March/April 2012 feature article in Public Libraries entitled, “Library Service to the Homeless” and is currently  the coordinator for a grant that Hennepin County Library received from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation to enhance library services to the homeless.
