Writing is a vital skill for private and public sector employees. Your work needs to be clear, concise, logical and correct. This course will help you plan your written documents and choose the most effective way to present information to your audience. You will become a more competent and confident writer; with a stronger ability to use clear, concise and correct language. The focus will be on improving letters, reports, memos, Email and other written documents. 

What you will learn:

WHY WRITE?

Participants will learn to identify the value of writing.

THE FOUR C'S, WORD AGREEMENT AND ACTIVE/PASSIVE VOICE

Participants will learn the four of the C's of writing: clear, concise, complete, and correct. Participants will explore word agreement and active/passive voice through a brief lecture and writing exercises.  

SENTENCES AND SENTENCE TYPES

Participants will learn and discuss the structure of sentences and paragraphs. Then, participants will apply this knowledge to a writing exercise. Participants will also examine and rank several business letters, helping them explore their own style.

MANNERS, COURTESY, PRACTICAL LANGUAGE AND INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE

Participants will examine some common dilemmas (such as fewer vs. less) and suggested solutions. When writing, participants will learn to use practical language and politically correct language. They will complete several writing exercises that includes re-writing sentences.  

SENTENCE CONSTRUCTION AND PUNCTUATION

Participants will learn the two basic rules for constructing sentences. Participants will re-write sentences that don’t follow these rules. Participants will also learn the basic rules on punctuation.

WRITING BUSINESS LETTERS, WRITING EFFECTIVE EMAILS AND WRITING MEMOS

This lesson explains the steps for writing a business letter, types of letters, and the parts of a business letter. Participants will then examine samples of business letters to determine the type and the parts of each letter.  Participants will be given tips on writing effective emails and managing mail as well as learning how to write a memo. 

SPELLING, PROOFREADING, REVIEWING YOUR WRITING AND WRITING CHALLENGES

Participants identify common spelling errors and practice their proofreading skills. In addition, they will customize a checklist to help them ensure that each document is the best that they can do. In closing, participants will work to identify some possible solutions to the ten most common writing challenges.
