Postpartum/Perinatal Mood Disorders (PPMD) and the Role of the Mental Health Practitioner

3 Continuing Education Hours
LMSW/LCSW/LMHC/LCAT/LMFT

This three hour workshop will provide the mental health practitioner with the skills needed to screen, identify, and provide a treatment plan for women experiencing PPMD. The expected outcome is for the practitioner to come away with a better understanding of PPMD, and to know when to refer, collaborate, and identify a psychiatric emergency that needs immediate action.

 

Who should attend?

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the care of an expectant or new mother.  

The following topics will be discussed:
  • Postpartum/ perinatal mood disorders-risk factors
  • Signs and symptoms
  • Screening and diagnostics
  • Intervention and treatmentplanning
  • Clinical tools and standards practitioners

The participant will be able to:
  • Define the concept of Postpartum/Perinatal Mood Disorders (PPMD)
  • List knowledge of identification, screening, and diagnosing PPMD.
  • Describe basic principles of a treatment plan for PPMD, coordinating and collaborating with other health care professionals, and providing a referral base for the patients and their families.
  • Assess through reflection the learners’ own experiences with caring for women suffering with PPMD.
  • Correlate the learners’ reflections to possible interventions when working with PPMD patients.
      • Provide techniques for assessment, teaching, and detection of warning signs when working with the PPMD patient.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Cheryl R. Zauderer, Ph.D., CNM, NPP, IBCLC

Dr. Cheryl Zauderer has been a registered nurse since 1985.  Her areas of expertise are in maternal newborn health, and psychiatric mental health. Her areas of research are in Postpartum/Perinatal Mood Disorders (PPMD) and Skin-to-Skin Contact. Cheryl has also served as a board member for PSI (Postpartum Support International) and has been the Nassau/Suffolk coordinator for PSI since 2009.

Cheryl has authored a book entitled Maternity Leave: The New Mothers Guide to the First Six Weeks Postpartum, Praeclarus Press. It is a self-help book for new mothers focusing on the first six weeks postpartum. She also has an active social network and maintains a blog on her website; postpartumcare1.com, that contains current evidenced based information for new mothers.  Since 2005 she has maintained a thriving private practice where she treats women for perinatal mood disorders and other women’s health issues by providing psychotherapy and psychopharmacology.
