Dr. David J. Fitzpatrick is a professor of history at Washtenaw Community College whose research focuses on military policy and on civil-military relations in the United States during the post-Civil War era.  He will discuss his most recent book Emory Upton:  Misunderstood Reformer (Oklahoma University Press, 2017).  Upton is well known for his exploits at Rappahannock Station (1863), at Spotsylvania (1864) and on Wilson’s Cavalry Raid (1865) during the Civil War, but he is less well known for his post-war efforts to reform the United States Army.  Those efforts failed in his lifetime (he committed suicide in 1881), but they came to fruition with the Root Reforms of the early 20^th Century. 

Books will be available for purchase at the event from Literati Bookstore.  We will have light refreshments after the lecture and Dr. Fitzpatrick will be available to sign books.
