Concrete Slabs and Masonry Codes Update Seminar

A Review of Design and Specification Guides for Concrete Floors

Presented By: Amir Bonakdar, PhD, P.E.                                                         Business Development Manager - Western Region, Euclid Chemical

About the Presentation - This presentation covers topics that affect the structural and long-term durability performance of concrete floors. Various sections of ACI 360R (Guide to Design of Slabs-on-Ground) will be reviewed with a focus on concrete materials and technology. Advanced mix designs and specialty admixtures allow for extending the joint spacing in slabs while minimizing the cracks. Such concrete floors have low shrinkage and are reinforced for crack-width control using reinforcing bars or fibers (steel or synthetic). Various methods for thickness design are discussed for unreinforced and reinforced concrete slabs-on-ground. Sealers, densifiers and dry-shakes can further be specified and used to improve the topical properties of concrete floors for certain applications. ACI 302, 360R and ACI 544.4R guidelines are reviewed for high performance concrete floor construction. Key performance-based specification parameters will also be discussed in this presentation.

About the Speaker - Amir Bonakdar is the business development manager for Euclid Chemical in the West. He has a Master’s degree in structural engineering from the University of Tehran (2006) and a PhD degree from Arizona State University (2010). Amir’s academic and professional life has been dedicated to fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) and concrete durability. He joined Euclid Chemical in 2013 and has been an active member of ACI, PCI, ASTM and SEA. He is a subcommittee chair for ACI 544 (FRC) and has chaired a new ACI design guide on FRC. He is also an active member of ACI 201 (concrete durability) and a voting member of ACI 360 (slabs on ground).

What is New and Wonderful in the 2016 TMS402/602, and What You Can Do to Optimize Your Design of Masonry

Presented By: Kurt Siggard, FTMS                                                                     Executive Director, Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada

About the Presentation - With the adoption of the 2018 International Building Code, the 2016 TMS402/602 is referenced for use in designing masonry buildings. We will discuss the major changes to TMS402/602 in both the 2013 and 2016 versions. The presentation will address the re-chaptering of TMS402/602, including updated material standards and f'm strengths. We will discuss ways you can improve your project specifications. And, just for fun, we will discuss "horror stories from the field".

About the Speaker - Kurt Siggard has been Executive Director of the Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada (CMACN) since 2006.  Prior to joining CMACN, Mr. Siggard worked in senior management positions for over twenty years in the fields of geotechnical engineering, materials testing, construction inspection, and construction management. During that time he spent ten years as an Associate Professor teaching courses in construction materials and inspection.  Mr. Siggard served on the board, including a term as President, of the California Council of Testing and Inspection Agencies.  Mr. Siggard currently serves on the Board of Directors of Collaborative for High Performance Schools. Mr. Siggard is a Fellow member of The Masonry Society, and is a voting member of TMS402/602. Mr. Siggard currently serves on several state and national committees related to the concrete masonry industry.
