Introduction to Centering Prayer

Led by:  Sr. Joyce Cox B.V.M. and Dr. Rebecca Cortes

Relationships are woven into our daily lives.  Relationship with God is basic to our prayer life.  This retreat will focus on our central relationship with God as a model for the relationships that make up the fabric of our lives.  Through mindful awareness, Lectio Divina, and silence, we will explore the heart of Centering Prayer, “Resting in God,” which was the classical meaning of Contemplative Prayer in the Catholic tradition for the first sixteen centuries. This silent retreat is designed for those interested in beginning the practice of centering prayer.  It will provide an opportunity to deepen our commitment to our relationship with God in our daily lives.

About Sr. Joyce & Dr. Cortes:

Sr. Joyce Cox, B.V.M is an educator, theologian and developmental psychologist who has been in ministries for the Archdiocese of Seattle over the past 26 years. She has been the Director of Spirituality for the Archbishop Brunett Retreat Center providing retreats, conferences and spiritual direction there and in parishes and faith communities. She currently serves as the Director of Ecumenical/Interreligious Dialogue for the Archdiocese of Seattle and has been a presenter in Centering Prayer for the past eight years.

Dr. Rebecca C. Cortes has been practicing Centering Prayer for over 10 years and initially became interested in Centering Prayer as a way to deepen her relationship with God.  More recently, she has become intrigued by the "wholeness" of Centering Prayer and how it and other contemplative practices enrich body, mind, and spirit.  Dr. Cortes received her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from the Pennsylvania State University.  She studies the emotional development of young children and the role of teachers and parents in that process.
