Indianapolis Chapter CSI February Meeting:

Panel Discussion on Energy Modeling: Current Issues, Best Practices

Note: This month's meeting will once again be held at the Marten House Hotel and Lilly Conference Center. Please take a moment to register for this meeting, if you plan on attending.

Our distinguished panel will discuss current issues in energy modeling and offer their perspective on how best to use energy modeling to dirve outcomes for teh owner. The panel will be moderated; the moderator will present a short slide-based presentation on current modeling tools; each panelist will share some insight into how energy modeling has been successfully incorporated into recent projects; each panelist will be asked questions by the moderator; the audience will have time for Q&A.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the current state of energy modeling being employed; its benefits and limitations
  • Learn how various envelope designs impact HVAC and lighting selection.
  • Learn best practices for using energy modeling to bring the A/E/O team together
  • Be able to hear real world answers to issues faced on current projects

Moderator:

Dr. Thanos Tzempelikos, Associate Professor, Purdue University

Dr. Thanos Tzempelikos received his BSc. in physics in 1999 from the National University of Athens, Greece, where he specialized in building physics. He continued his graduate studies in the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, where he completed his M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in building engineering. Dr. Tzempelikos's  field of expertise is design of energy-efficient buildings, including thermal performance of building envelope, daylighting, building simulation, solar buildings, automated shading/lighitng controls, and renewable energy technologies.

Panelists:

Dan Overbey, Architect, Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf

Dan currently serves as Director of Sustainable Design for BDMD. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Ball State University, where he teaches environmental systems to second and third year architecture students. He also teaches a graduate level buiding science course at the Boston Architectural College's Sustainable Design Institute. He regularly presents workshops on energy modeling in the design process to students and others in a variety of national forums. He was recognized in 2011 by IBJ in their annual 40 Under 40 list for his working in furthering green building. He was recently awarded the 2014 Young Architects Award by AIA National.

Eric Broemel, Engergy Engineer, Schmidt Asociates

Eric Broemel is an energy engineer at Schmidt Associates specializing in energy modeling and high performance building design. He earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University. He currently serves as ASHRAE Indy's Membership Chair. Mr. Broemel is a licensed engineer in the State of Indiana and a Certified Energy Manager (CEM).

Amanda Doenges, Campus Engineer, Butler University

Amanda Doenges is the Campus Engineer at Butler University. She is responsible for energy and utility management, campus master planning, and project management for the university. Prior to working at Butler, she was an Energy Engineer for Heapy Engineering where she performed energy audits, energy modeling, and sustainability consulting. Amanda is a Certified Energy Manager and has her LEED AP in BD+C and O+M. She has a Bachelor's in mechanical engineering and a Master's in renewable energy, both from the University of Dayton.
