Continuing Centering Prayer

Led by:  Sr. Joyce Cox, B.V.M., Dr. Rebecca Cortes, & Paul Peterhans, M.Div.

St. Gregory the Great (6th century) in summarizing the Christian contemplative tradition expressed it as “resting in God.” This was the classical meaning of Contemplative Prayer in the Catholic tradition for the first sixteen centuries. This mostly-silent retreat is designed for persons already practicing contemplative prayer. It will be an opportunity to deepen one’s practice of centering prayer and one’s desire and commitment to live a contemplative life.

Recommended for those already practicing contemplative prayer/centering prayer/Christian meditation.

About Sr. Joyce, Dr. Cortes, and Mr. Peterhans:

Sr. Joyce Cox, B.V.M is an educator, theologian and developmental psychologist who has been in ministries for the Archdiocese of Seattle over the past 26 years. She has been the Director of Spirituality for the Archbishop Brunett Retreat Center providing retreats, conferences and spiritual direction there and in parishes and faith communities. She currently serves as the Director of Ecumenical/Interreligious Dialogue for the Archdiocese of Seattle and has been a presenter in Centering Prayer for the past eight years.

Dr. Rebecca C. Cortes has been practicing Centering Prayer for over 10 years and initially became interested in Centering Prayer as a way to deepen her relationship with God. More recently, she has become intrigued by the "wholeness" of Centering Prayer and how it and other contemplative practices enrich body, mind, and spirit. Dr. Cortes received her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from the Pennsylvania State University. She studies the emotional development of young children and the role of teachers and parents in that process.

Paul Peterhans, M.Div. is the Theology Chair at Seattle Preparatory School.  He holds his Masters in Divinity from Seattle University and has been practicing Centering Prayer for several years.  Paul is especially interested in social justice and care for the poor.
