SCORE Workshop - Legal Aspects of Starting a New Business - Southeast Regional Library, Garner

Seminar Description

Now that you have opened your business – or are considering doing so, you need some legal pointers in order to make the best decisions for positioning your business up front and to keep your business compliant. Come explore the legal requirements for starting and maintaining a business presented by local practicing attorneys.  We will discuss the mandatory first steps along with best practice suggestions for getting your business running and keeping legal issues from being a distraction.  Topics include government regulations, popular forms of business, websites for sample documents, contracts to protect employers, responsibilities related to hiring others and any questions participants might have about their particular situation.

Speaker Biography
R. Lynn Coleman is a practicing attorney in Cary, NC, currently focusing her professional efforts on business creation and management.  She is attorney on call for several local small business ventures and advises business clients all over North Carolina.  Lynn’s experience spans three decades and includes large corporations, small businesses, non-profit organizations and units of government.

After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BS/BA in Industrial Relations/Political Science, Lynn attended law school at Campbell University School of Law, where she served on the Law Review and was a member of the law school’s second graduation class.  A stint as Judge Gerald Arnold’s Law Clerk at the NC Court of Appeals was followed by private practice in Onslow County which included legal representation on every aspect of business management and operation.  Lynn then honed her skills dealing with government regulation and litigation relating to business activities as an assistant city attorney in Wilmington, NC. 

Intrigued by issues of technology in litigation, Lynn recently obtained Certification as an eDiscovery Specialist by the Assoc. of Certified eDiscovery Specialists.  She is a member of the NC Bar Assoc., the Tenth Judicial District Bar Assoc., NV Municipal Attorneys Assoc., the Ruffian Foundation and Greenpeace.  Lynn enjoys her vegetable garden in the summer, her cats year round and volunteers at the Wake County Animal Shelter
