Leadership Institute
for District-Level Leaders

June 24-26, 2015

Take your leadership to the next level and make a greater impact on the success of the students and staff in your district. McREL's institute for district-level instructional administrators and leaders offers the latest research and most effective strategies for successfully initiating and managing short- and long-term improvement and innovation in your system:

  • Day 1:  Research-based Characteristics of Effective District Leadership
Learn about the district-level leadership activities and behaviors that research shows are most connected to student and staff success, and how these leadership responsibilities apply to the actions of superintendents, school boards, and central office staff. Discover how McREL's Balanced Leadership Framework can help you build a purposeful community, identify the right focus for the district, and effectively manage change throughout your district.
  • Day 2:  What Matters Most from a High-Reliability System Perspective
Learn about high-reliability concepts and actions used in healthcare, aviation, and other complex industries, and how these principles can be effectively applied to education systems. Determine the current state of your district systems and begin to map steps toward improving the quality of instruction and reducing variability in instructional quality within and among your schools.
  • Day 3:  Strategy Development, Continuous Improvement, and Innovation
Combine research, best practice, and HRO principles into an action-oriented strategy session for leading improvement and innovation, using long-range futures planning and short-cycle, small-scale testing processes. Identify key drivers of change in your own district and begin to strategize for the potential futures you will face. Determine next steps for improvement and innovation, and develop the first in a series of P-D-S-A cycles to test and scale up your ideas.

Registration fee
$499 per person. Includes handouts, materials, snacks, and lunch each day.
Register three or more people from the same district and receive 10% off per person.
