Pursuing the Power of Peace

The May program for The 2nd Community will be held on Sunday, May 3, rather than on our customary 2nd Monday of the month.  We wanted to have an event where could move from "talking" about peace to "doing" something about peace. The opening address, "The Power of One God," delivered by NUMC Senior Pastor Eric Folkerth, who has an embracing view of the love of God, will frame the event: we worship one God and we are one humanity.  Joined together we can make an impact on peace.  The final address will bring our emphasis to "The Power of One," delivered by a person who has demonstrated in his own life what one person can do.

Rais Bhuiyan, Founder and President of World Without Hate, was shot in the face by a man who saw himself as avenging the 9/11 attacks.  Rais overcame hatred through forgiveness and sought to save his assailant from execution, actually forming a friendship with the man, and he speaks all over the world on the power of one through forgiveness and compassion.

Rev. Eric Folkerth is pastor of a church committed to social justice and supportive of the efforts of The 2nd Community, which Northaven hosts, in seeking to promote understanding and peace through the personal engagement of persons from all different faith traditions in open discussion of topics of central importance.  He is also an accomplished musician and song writer, who loves to communicate with this univeral language.

The afternoon program includes:

  • Opportunities to dialogue and deepen understanding with individuals from many faiths
  • Opportunities to engage with local leaders working for peace
  • Opportunities to meditate and pray for peace
  • An opportunity to create your own personal peace plan
  • Music and refreshments

Northaven provides child care to enable parents to attend events.  You may request child care when you register.  The church needs 48 hours notice, with information about the number and age of children.
