Preventing Falls with Restorative Nursing and Mobility Enhancement Programs 

Course description: This session will feature a presentation by Jeri Ann Lundgren, RN, BSN, PHN, CWS, CWCN. We will discuss how decreased mobility is the primary cause of falls and an overall deterioration in the health of residents. Exercise and restorative nursing programs prevent falls by enhancing mobility, balance, strength and endurance. It will describe how to set up an environment to help promote safe mobility. It will also discuss Medicare/MDS requirements for capturing a restorative nursing program.

In addition to Jeri’s session, HealthInsight will provide an overview of the statewide quality improvement initiatives that are currently underway.

Target audience: Administrators, directors of nursing, restorative nurses, nurse managers, nursing assistants, therapists, dieticians and activity personnel

Presenter profile: Jeri Ann Lundgren, RN, BSN, PHN, CWS, CWCN has been working in long-term care since 1990. Over the past 2 years, she has focused on the effects of immobility and worked with exercise physiologists, physical therapists, personal trainers, ergonomics and nursing to develop mobility enhancement programs. Her extensive background in long-term care nationally includes survey management, litigation support, wound care consultation, program development, and as a clinical expert for several state Quality Improvement Organizations and state health departments. Her background also includes 4 years as a director of nurses in a long-term care facility. Currently, Ms. Lundgren is president of Senior Providers Resource.

The New Mexico Health Care Association has approved this training for nursing home administrators and activity directors.
