On Friday, February 26, 2016, the annual Chrism Mass will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Honolulu. It will be followed by a Clergy Education Day in the St. Andrew's Von Holt Room with guest speaker the Rev. Robert S. Heaney, Associate Professor of Christian Mission and Director of the Center for Anglican Communion Studies, Virginia Theological Seminary.

This will last until 3:00 pm, with about 45 minutes for lunch.

Chrism Mass

At this service, the Bishop blesses the oils of chrism (for baptism), healing, and the catechumenate, and the clergy take a portion of these oils back to their own churches for use during the coming year.

Reminder to clergy:
Bring bottles so that you can take oils back to your congregation.  

Clergy Education Day

After the Chrism Mass will be a Clergy Education Day in the Cathedral's Von Holt Room with a special guest speaker, the Rev. Robert S. Heaney.  

The topic will be The Future of Anglican Mission: Critical and Constructive Conversations. Mission is a contested word and a contested practice. Yet, the nature of God is mission. How do we understand and how do we practice mission that does not deny missionary malpractice and at the same time does not reduce mission to charity? This will be a question at the heart of our conversations together.  

The Rev. Robert S. Heaney is an Anglican priest-scholar ordained in the Church of Ireland. He has experience serving the church and academy internationally including long and short-term ministry in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the United States of America. He is Associate Professor of Christian Mission and Director of the Center for Anglican Communion Studies, Virginia Theological Seminary.

He holds a Ph.D from an Irish Jesuit school (The Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy) and a D.Phil from the University of Oxford. Among a number of published articles and book contributions he is also the author of From Historical to Critical Post-Colonial Theology (Pickwick, 2015) and senior editor of Faith Neighbors: Christian Muslim Vision and Practice (Church Publishing, forthcoming).
