Track A in New York: The Fast Track to Becoming a Registered Play Therapist

NEW YORK (BROOKLYN)

If you are in Maryland and looking to register for Track A, please go back to the website Training Calendar and select Track A in Maryland.

Track A: The Fast Track

Track A is the fast track to becoming a Registered Play Therapist. When you sign up for Track A, you will complete 150 hours of training. There are a few workshops that are not designated as Track A. Track A participants continue to take training until they complete the 150 hours. How long it takes depends on the individual, but you must complete your 150 hours within 3 years of beginning. If you miss a session, you may take the same training the next time it is offered or replace it with another training. Average completion of the Track A program takes 12-24 months. We also offer a Play Therapy Summer Boot Camp (part of Track A) where you may accrue 30 or more hours of training. A few workshops are offered via live or recorded webinars.

Do we get a copy of the handout from each seminar we attend? Yes, CBPS has gone green and we now send handouts electronically. Your CE certificate will also be sent electronically after completion of each seminar.

Who are the instructors? Please see our website to view faculty members and their credentials. We have faculty members with a wide range of training and experience, some of whom have been with us for many years.

When should I begin Track A? Track A can begin any time. The program is based on a rolling admission standard. We recommend beginning with the History, Theory, & Foundations of Play Therapy webinar.

Why Become a Registered Play Therapist (RPT)

Mental health services for children ages 3-12 requires specialized training in play therapy. Play therapy is a skill that is not heavily taught in graduate school. Our play therapy institute provides 150 hours of intensive training in play therapy and child psychotherapy to provide the expertise needed to bring about healing to children who present with trauma, behavioral issues, emotional dysregulation, anger, rage, grief and loss, and many other symptoms. Play therapy is no longer a well-kept secret the way it was when we first began the institute in 1997. With extensive research through the efforts of the Association for Play Therapy, this practice is shown to be evidenced-based.

How to Become a Registered Play Therapist (RPT)

This is a credentialing process through the Association for Play Therapy (APT), a nationwide organization located in California. You MUST be a licensed mental health professional. After completing 150 hours of training and clinical supervision in play therapy, an application is submitted to the APT. You must be a licensed mental health provider and meet other requirements specified by the APT. Your credentials would be RPT (Registered Play Therapist). You may also become an RPT-S (Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor). The credential provided is not a license. To obtain first-hand information on how to become an RPT, please visit the APT website at www.a4pt.org.
