District Leadership That Works

Two Day Institute

A Balanced Leadership® approach to improving systems and innovation for student and staff success

July 21-22, 2016

Day 1:  Research-based Characteristics of Effective District Leadership

Learn about the district-level leadership activities and behaviors that research shows are most connected to student and staff success, and how these leadership responsibilities apply to the actions of superintendents, school boards, and central office staff. Discover how McREL's Balanced Leadership Framework can help you build a purposeful community, identify the right focus for the district, and effectively manage change throughout your district.

Day 2:  What Matters Most from a High-Reliability System Perspective

Learn about principles of high-reliability systems and the actions used in healthcare, aviation, and other complex industries, and how these principles can be effectively applied to education systems. Determine the current state of your district systems and begin to map steps toward improving the quality of instruction and reducing variability in instructional quality within and among your schools. Learn how to develop action-oriented strategies for leading improvement and innovation using short-cycle, small-scale processes and determine next steps for implementing P-D-S-A cycles within your system.
