OnlineusRAP: An Innovation in Data Driven Safety Analysis
The National Center for Rural Road Safety (Safety Center) will be hosting a FREE, 1.5 hour online training event.
This Safety Center sponsored webinar will introduce participants to the U.S. Road Assessment Program, an innovative and cost-effective tool for safety investment planning that can be used on any road network. Unlike traditional safety analysis tools that require extensive multiyear crash data, usRAP uses roadway feature data and crash prediction models to generate a safety investment plan to guide further engineering studies and investment priorities. Though it can be applied anywhere, usRAP is especially suited for use in rural areas, where local road ownership is high, and vehicle-miles travelled may be too low to yield actionable crash data. Additionally, the Federal Highway Administration recognizes the program as a viable tool for data-driven safety analysis as promoted by their Every Day Counts 3 initiative. In this webinar, the Roadway Safety Foundation and MRIGlobal – the program’s lead sponsor and technical expert, respectively – will define usRAP’s core protocols, and explore their application to improving safety on rural highways.
After the course, participants will have basic understanding of:
- usRAP’s function and unique value in safety analysis
- Application of the ViDA software
- How to pursue a usRAP project in order to meet data-driven safety analysis needs in rural areas
The course presenters include:
Bruce Hamilton, Director of Safety & Research Programs, Roadway Safety Foundation- Bruce Hamilton is the Director of Safety & Research Programs at the Roadway Safety Foundation, a non-profit organization in Washington, DC dedicated to advancing the "hard" side of highway safety: roadway design, roadside environment, and operating conditions. This is his second stint at RSF; in between, he served as a communications manager at the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Hamilton oversees the Roadway Safety Foundation’s support of the U.S. Road Assessment Program and other initiatives. He is also pursuing a Master of Public Health at the George Washington University’s Milken Institute.
- Doug Harwood is Program Director in the Transportation Research Center at MRIGlobal in Kansas City, Missouri. Doug has over 40 years of experience in highway safety research and development. He has served as principal investigator for usRAP since 2004, first for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and now for the Roadway Safety Foundation. He has also led or participated in the development of other key safety tools including the AASHTO Highway Safety Manual and Safety Analyst. Doug has a B.S in Civil Engineering from Clarkson University and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University.
