SISTERHOOD JULY ROSH CHODESH GATHERING

Join us to celebrate the new moon of the month of Tammuz.

Tammuz is the fourth of the 12 months of the Jewish calendar. The month of Tammuz begins the “season” of summer. The three months of this season are Tammuz, Av and Elul.

A Meditation for Tekufat Tammuz
~ shared by Rabbi Janet Madden

This is no abrupt revolution,

This sloping into the almost imperceptible start of a one quarter turn: a mere bend, a gentle rotation, a junction, a re-alignment to the axis.

But there is no reversing this subtle shift, this slow inexorable beginning of the journey into the dark, the breach and the destruction.

And the circular paradox: the easy glide into narrow distressfulness, the fading light shines on what was and illuminates the hope of what will be,

From first light to full darkness and back again.

We will meet at 7:00pm at Karen Gansberg's home for light refreshments and socializing and then begin the program promptly at 7:30 pm and end around 9:00 pm.  Deborah Wechsler will lead this month's gathering. You don't need to have previously attended to enjoy this gathering.

What is Rosh Chodesh?

Rosh Chodesh means the beginning (or head) of the month, and has long been recognized as a woman's holiday celebrated exclusively by women. Why do women merit a special holiday once a month?  The special connection between women and Rosh Chodesh harkens back to the episode of the Golden Calf, when the women refused to surrender their jewelry for use in making the idol. As a reward, they were given Rosh Chodesh as a day that they observe more than the men.  According to kabbalistic teachings, women share a special relationship with the moon and as such, they have special reason to celebrate Rosh Chodesh.

Our group celebrates the beginning of each new Hebrew month, and honors the sacred cycle of time.  Rosh Chodesh offers our sisters the opportunity to explore what Judaism means to them, and how it impacts their lives. This monthly gathering takes place at different members' homes and is led either by the hostess, a volunteer leader, or by the Rosh Chodesh coordinator.

Socializing, light refreshments, and meaningful discussion abound.
