Lobby Days - January 30 & 31, 2017

Hotel Information: LWV-TX has secured a discount at the LaQuinta Inn, at 300 East 11th St, Austin, 78701. Call the La Quinta Inn (Ph: 512-476-1166) to make your reservation. The La Quinta is located within 1 block of the Capital grounds. Rooms are blocked under the name League of Women Voters of Texas, Confirmation No: 09071693. Rates are as follows: Sunday, Jan. 29, $125 (Optional day - enjoy Austin!) Monday & Tuesday, Jan. 30 & 31, $162 each night. These room rates are available until January 8, 2017, after that room rates will increase.

1:15      Welcome by Representative Donna Howard (TBC)            

1:30      Mimi Marziani, Executive Director, Texas Civil Rights Project

Ms. Marziani will discuss voting rights and election issues in Texas. She has an extensive background in civil rights advocacy and expertise in election law. The Texas Civil Rights Project uses legal advocacy to empower Texas communities and create policy change. TCRP is among the most influential civil rights organizations in the Lone Star State.

2:30      Representative from the Womens Healthcare Coalition

The Texas Women’s Healthcare Coalition is a coalition of organizations promoting access to preventative healthcare for all Texas Women.  TWHC is working toward the vision of a state where every woman has access to the preventive and preconception care that will help her stay healthy and prepare for healthy, planned pregnancies.

3:30      Jim Nelson, Texas Association of School Boards (TASB)

Jim Nelson has extensive experience counseling government and private entities and officials in many areas, including government procurement and contracting; ethics; and political and campaign activities (including bond elections). Mr. Nelson also represents government and private clients as a consultant and advocate.

4:30      Grace Chimene, Vice President, LWV-TX

Ms. Chimene is a pediatric nurse practitioner.  In the last year, she has been instrumental in advancing state and local League efforts to engage community partners and constituents in advocating for League positions. She will discuss League advocacy and grassroots lobbying.
