The Legal Issues of Social Media

A Free SCORE Small Business Workshop co-Sponsored by the Wilton Library and the Wilton Chamber of Commerce

Social media websites such as Facebook®, LinkedIn® and Twitter® are changing the ways we advertise and promote ourselves to others, and even the way we think about things. Our legal system has had trouble keeping up with the new technology.  As a result, there are many cutting-edge legal issues that attorneys, accountants and other professionals are only beginning to grapple with. In this fast-paced, entertaining presentation, technology lawyer Cliff Ennico will walk you through the social media maze and help answer some of your questions about the rules that apply when you engage in social activities online.

You will learn “state of the art” answers to the most pressing questions involving social media, including:

  • do you have privacy rights when you post something on Facebook?
  • can you be sued because of something you say on Facebook or LinkedIn?
  • can you be sued if somebody else says something bad on your Facebook page?
  • can employers restrict their employees’ social media activities?
  • can the Government (or a hostile person) use your social media postings as evidence against you?
  • do you have to charge sales taxes when you sell something on a social media website?

Presenter:  Cliff Ennico

Attorney, author, syndicated columnist, speaker, television personality and humorist, Cliff Ennico has helped more than 15,000 small businesses get off the ground over the past 35 years.  A former Wall Street lawyer and business development consultant, Cliff is the author of ten books on entrepreneurship and small business success. He speaks nationwide to corporations, business groups and professional organizations on legal and tax issues affecting entrepreneurs, technology companies and e-commerce platforms.
